MUSIC/DANCE APRIL 9
the Northport Arts Coalition, in
cooperation with the Northport Public Library, presents an energizing
evening of Israeli Folk Dancing. Instructor Mary Hall
introduces the audience to traditional dances that span the history and
culture of Israel. Enjoy the fun, fitness, and friendship of dancing the
ever popular Israeli circle dances. Free Admission. Dancing will
be followed by cake and coffee to celebrate NAC’s 10th

They were so very attentive, and I could tell from some of the comments, that they really listened to the narration and really watched the dancing carefully. It's rare to have such an appreciative audience and we really enjoyed it!”
POETS IN PORT
Gladys Henderson will be the featured poet at 7:30 pm on Friday, April 25, 2008 at Caffé Portofino, 249 Main St., Northport, opposite the theatre. There will also be an Open Reading — the audience is encouraged to bring their poems and participate. For more information, contact Steven Schmidt.
Gladys Henderson runs poetry workshops for Live Poets, based in Islip and the Poets Circle at the Graphic Eye Art Gallery in Port Washington and co-hosts a poetry reading venue at the Cool Beanz coffee house in Saint James, New York.
An award winning poet, in 2004 she was
awarded first prize in the Live Poets,
Mid-Island Y JCC,
and Ronkonkoma Productions poetry competitions. In 2005 she won first place
in the Farmingdale Poetry Group and
Performance Poetry
contests. For the year 2006, she received first place in the Ronkonkoma
Productions competition and was a finalist for the
Paumanok Poetry Award
2006.
READERS’ THEATER
The Northport Reader's Theater will be meeting on
April 28 at 7:30 at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 270
Main St, Northport. We will be reading "Talk" by Lois McShane
and "Welcome to Heaven/Not Heaven?: A One-Act Play in Two Acts" by
Peter Lee . This will be the first play reading to involve music
with audience participation.

The next meeting of the Northport Reader's Theater will be on May 19
when we will be reading two plays by David Zinman.

Do-ing Music
April 25 - Do-ing Music is proud to
present Northport’s own professional chamber ensemble, Canta Libra. This
unique and enchanting group of harp, flute and strings will feature Paumanok,
a newly commissioned work with soprano, by Jerry Ulrich, a transporting work
by Arnold Bax, and a lighthearted quintet by Jean Francaix. A meet the
artists reception will follow. Concert at 7:30, at the

MUSIC
The Northport High School Tour Choir has been
given the esteemed opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall on April 22,
2008 at 8pm! High School choral directors, Ellen McCarthy and
Nicholas Hart have invited elementary and middle school
students to join them for this special event. Two to five 5th grade
students from each elementary school and students from each middle school
will be selected to join the Tour Choir for this event
CHARLIE MANN SEMI-FINALIST IN INTERNATIONAL TUBA > COMPETITION - Charlie Mann, 17, a senior at Northport High School, has been selected as a semi-finalist in the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference
(ITEC) 2008 competition. This bi-annual competition will take place in June at the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of Music in Ohio. Winners and competitors in past years have come from Taiwan,
Australia and Norway. The number of
semi-finalists in the world for the Young Artist Division Solo Tuba
competition is approximately ten. This division includes both high
school and first year college students. Charlie was chosen on the basis of a
preliminary CD > which was sent to > the judges "blindly," with only a
number on the disc. Northport Choir Director, Mrs. Ellen
McCarthy, accompanied Charlie on the recording, and > he credits her superb
piano playing with helping him get to the next > round.
The Northport Community Orchestra under the direction of Richard Hyman Presents a free
concert of classical music Friday, April 4, 2008 8 p.m. East Northport Middle School 1075 Fifth
Avenue, East Northport (1/4 mile east of Larkfield Rd.) A program of Schubert, Vaughan Williams,

Cheryl Wheeler, a pioneer of the
singer-songwriter genre, performs original ballads and humorous songs at the
Last Licks Café. . Wheeler, whose repertoire includes poetic,
intelligent ballads in the traditional folk-style, says her “evil twin” is
the savagely funny social critic responsible for her devastating satirical
and topical songs. Kenny White joins Wheeler for this performance.
