Auditions for the Spring 2008 session of Citywide Youth Opera

Some of you may already know about this opera opportunity for adolescent singers. Please forward the information on to any junior high or highschool singers you know in the tri-state area who might be

interested and eligible. (I think the cut-off age is 20). This organization was founded a few years ago by my friend Andrés Andrade. Andrés is a tenor himself, and taught voice and opera at the LaGuardia

School of the Arts in Manhattan, so he has experience as a singer and teaching very young singers. Andrés has also been teaching privately and at Queens College.  He was  one of the original founders and

directors of NYMVAE, a local opera company in NYC, which has been mounting full operas, concerts and out reach events for several years now, utilizing the talents of many local singers. I think that this is

a wonderful opportunity for the singers of the future to learn and perform opera amongst their peers.  Citywide Youth Opera > will take place on   > Saturday, January 12, 2008 > Please call 212-539-3561

> or E-mail admin@citywideyouthopera.org > to schedule an appointment > Two songs requested, >

> one of which should be in English.  > An accompanist will be provided.  > For more information, visit our website > http://www.citywideyouthopera.org

SLAPSTICK COMEDY HITS NORTHPORT IN LEND ME A TENOR

Northport, N.Y., January, 2007) - The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport will start the New Year off right with tons of laughter! The next production of LEND ME A TENOR by Ken Ludwig, is sure to have audiences rolling on the floor with laughter. The story is set in 1934. The Cleveland Grand Opera is celebrating the biggest night in its history. World famous tenor TITO MORELLI, known to his fans as "Il Stupendo," is scheduled to sing the lead in OTELLO, produced as a gala fundraiser set to raise $50,000 for the company. Before the star gets beyond his hotel room however, things begin to unravel. Chaos sets in when a "Dear John" letter is mistaken for a suicide note and Tito's appearance onstage seems unlikely. But for HENRY SAUNDERS, General Manager of the Cleveland Opera, "the show must go on!" ... under any circumstance - even if it means sending a replacement onstage in disguise. A sensation on Broadway and in London's West End, LEND ME A TENOR is guaranteed to leave you teary eyed with laughter.

Tickets are NOW ON SALE and are $45.  Tickets may be purchased by calling (631) 261-2900, by visiting www.engemantheater.com, or at the Engeman Theater Box Office at 250 Main Street, Northport. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express accepted.

Is anyone interested in an opportunity for parts in the Township Theater Group  library program? There will be 9 performances on various Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Feb 29 through May 4 at different Suffolk County libraries. There are 3 plays on the program, two very short ones and one longer one act play, all comedies by Rich Orloff. If you were at our reading of -Couples- last year you will remember his wry style. The greatest need is for men and women ages 30's and 40's. There is also a part for a younger (college student) aged actor or actress. If you have anyone please have them contact Judy Bensimon jkbensimon@optonline.net or 631-368-6287.

Welcome new members: Judith Markowitz, First Presbyterian Church, JoAnn and John Proscia

The Northport Arts Coalition believes the arts make the world a better place and would like to thank the many individuals, businesses, and organizations that helped NAC bring the arts to the community in 2007.  Thank you to Connie Crispen at Caffe Portofino for providing a venue for NAC's monthly Poets in Port series, to St. Paul's United Methodist Church for providing a space for the monthly meeting of the Northport Reader's Theater, to Copenhagen Bakery for contributing their delicious pastries to various NAC events, and to La Mantia Gallery for their collaboration with NAC last spring on the Plein Air event.

Thanks also to the John Engemann Theatre for their technical assistance in the production of "Way Out Here", a NAC event that was presented in cooperation with the Northport Public Library, to the Northport Village Board of Trustees for providing space in the Village Hall for NAC's Art exhibits and for their support, most recently, of the display of three diversity billboards in the Village Park on Woodbine Ave.  NAC is also thankful for the opportunity to work with the Northport Chamber of Commerce to bring the community "Happenings on Main St." during the summer months.

The Northport Arts Coalition extends a special thank you and acknowledgement to the Northport/ East Northport Library for their help and cooperation in providing space for our events and for their financial support in helping NAC bring such wonderful events into the community.  Special thanks to Assemblyman Andrew Raia, Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper, the North Fork Bank, and Northport's Chase Manhattan Bank for their generous grants.  NAC is especially thankful to David Ambro, of the Northport Observer, for providing coverage of upcoming NAC events in the weekly column A NAC for the ARTS.

All of these individuals and organizations, along with NAC Advisory Board members, Lauren Desalvo, Kevin McMahon, Arlene Handel, Doris Rowe, Daniel Paige, Craig Fligstein, Annette Kirk, Kate Kelly, Mary Ellen Moll, and George Rehn, plus our program coordinators Steven Schmidt, Jo Ann Katz, and Marge Kawaller, made the presentation of NAC's 2007 events possible.

Attendance at all NAC events grew significantly in 2007 and we are most grateful to the many residents of Northport, E. Northport and the surrounding towns and villages who attended NAC events on a regular basis.  It is the community's support and love of the arts that will enable NAC to grow and present a variety of creative and unique events in 2008.  Thank you one and all and Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year.
