VISUAL ARTS
A Memorial for Abstract Expressionist Stanley Twardowicz

Celebrate the life and
work of Northport abstract expressionist
painter and photographer, Stanley
Twardowicz, at the Huntington Arts Council on Sunday, July 27th,
2008 from 2-5 p.m, at The Little Gallery, at 213 Main Street,
Huntington, NY.
The Northport Arts Coalition mourns the passing of Stanley Twardowicz, a well-known abstract expressionist, who lived and worked locally in Northport and Huntington. Stanley Twardowicz passed on June 12th, 2008, in Huntington Hospital, of complications from a fall, a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday.
Almost 50 years ago, NAC's Outreach Specialist, our own Charlotte Koons, was introduced to her late husband, Chester R. Koons (aka SilverBear) by Twardowicz, and was part of a circle which included Twardowicz, Lillian Dodson, Roy Lichtenstein, Franz Kline, Willem DeKooning, Jackson Pollack, George Grosz, Jules Olitski, Alan Kaprow, and Jack Kerouac,
First, from a home on Ocean Avenue, then, from his studio at 57Main Street, now a part of The Posey School building, Twardowicz lived, painted and provided a vibrant gathering place for students, fellow artists, writers, and intellectuals to gather. Twardowicz befriended other major painters of the abstract expressionist movement at Greenwich Village’s Cedar Tavern, and, there, began a close friendship with Jack Kerouac, rekindled when Kerouac moved to Northport. Twardowicz's relationship with Kerouac has been the subject of articles and books; and his personal photographs are treasured as possibly the last known images of Kerouac before his death in 1969.
Twardowicz was introduced to Zen philosophy by Kenzo Okada, and this had a major influence on his paintings which utilized techniques of pouring house paint onto flat canvas, using airbrush to create vibrating fields of color, and single hued, paint stained unprimed canvases. His paintings, and some of his photographs, are part of the permanent collection of museums across the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Twardowicz was the husband of celebrated Huntington artist and sculptor, Lillian Dodson, who met him as a student. Dodson stopped by Twardowicz’ Northport studio one day to request his tutelage in painting, they became inseparable, and finally married ten years later in 1971. In the 1990's they built Stanley a studio at Lillian’s home on Crooked Hill Road in Huntington.
Twardowicz taught at Hofstra University, where Dodson still teaches, as she says, "clay". Among many exhibitions at national and local galleries and the LI Art League, they were honored with a double retrospective of their work at the Emily Lowe Gallery of the university in 2007. Hofstra is also planning a tribute to celebrate Twardowicz's contributions to art education.
The
Huntington Arts Council will host a public
memorial on Sunday, July 27th, from 2 to 5 p.m. at
their Gallery, on 213 Main Street in Huntington. Contact
lfurey@huntingtonarts.org or

John

on canvas at the Wilkes Gallery (91 Main Street, Northport) from
June 25th-July 8th . In person on Sun.
