with Visual Artists and Artisans in the park from 12- 5pm, Music from 12- 1pm, Middle Eastern Dance with Inner Spirit’s Roni Yaari from1- 2pm, Music from 2- 4pm and Featured Poet, George Wallace and open mike from 4- 5pm.

 

Northport’s Second Annual Plein Air Painting Event!

June 20th -22nd  

plein air; to paint outdoors in natural light 


On the heels of the overwhelming success of Northport’s First Plein Air Painting Event, the search for the region’s most accomplished plein air painters continues this June in Northport’s Second Annual Plein Air Painting Event. On Friday and Saturday, June 20th and 21st, selected artists will be set up in locations throughout the village painting their interpretations of the scenery that is so unique to Northport.  On both days spectators can observe the creative process from start to finish and talk with the artists as they work.  Sunday, June 22nd, will feature an exhibition and silent auction for the “wet” paintings at LaMantia Gallery.

 

The Northport Reader's Theater will be meeting on June 16th, 7:30 at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport. They will be reading Vinny by John Passadino.

Poets in Port will feature Jay Jii at 7:30 pm on Friday, June 27th, 2008 at Caffé Portofino, 249 Main St., Northport, opposite the theatre. There will also be an open reading, the audience is encouraged to bring their poems and participate. For information, StevenSchmidt@optonline.net

Babylon Village Arts Council presents East Northport resident and NAC member Matthew Pierce, performing his Ballet Suites for Violin and Piano with NAC member Christine Dore, piano accompanist. The Last Licks Cafe Presents: The Tobacco Roadies with Jacqueline Schwab on Saturday, May 31st, 2008 with Open Mike starting at 7:30 PM, (sign-up at 7:00pm). Opera Night on June 6th, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Main Street in Northport, will feature Flutissimo, a flute quartet with Claudia Beeby, Julia Doczi, Leslie Straight, and Jerene Weitman at 7:30pm. Only a little over a month until the Northport Community Band, under the direction of Founder & Musical Director Robert W. Krueger and Associate Director Donald M. Sherman, reaches a major milestone. On July 3rd, the group will kick off a gala celebration of 50 uninterrupted seasons of providing concerts to area music lovers at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport Village on Thursday evenings in July. Concert dates are July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. VISUAL ARTS

 

NAC member Kate Kelly will have her photograph, "Spring Thaw," on exhibit at the fotofoto gallery as part of the exhibit, "Your Best Shot," their 4th Annual National Photography Competition, juried by Constance Schwartz, Director and Chief Curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art. Exhibition Dates: June 6th to July 13th, 2008. Fotofoto gallery is located at 372 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY. Opening reception on June 7th, from 5 - 7pm. 
 

Create and participate in a public art installation in Huntington:

“Huntington Columns” 


The public is invited to join Thea Lanzisero, with guest artists including Sydra Nightingale in the creation of this innovative environmental art piece inspired by the Egyptian colonnade at the temple of Aman-Ra in Karnak, and created entirely out of bamboo, jute rope and solar lighting. These sustainable local materials represent ‘eco-friendly’ elevated to an art form. Sat June 14th -Friday June 20th Sat/Sun: 1pm-4pm Mon-Friday: 10am-1pm & 4-7pm. Double Exposure, a play written by NAC member Michael Casano, will be performed as part of the American Dating Catastrophes, Vol. VI One Act Play Festival being held June 27th -29th at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College. Previously, Double Exposure was read during a meeting of the Northport Reader's Theater in 2007. Township Theater Group concludes its 55th season with, Over the River and Through the Woods. Directed by Fred Sprauer and produced by Betty Sprauer, comedy abounds when a young executive from New Jersey is offered his “dream job” in Seattle. Moving across country does not sit well with his four Italian-American grandparents who fill their Sunday dinner get-togethers with unsolicited advice, matchmaking and unending food in an effort to keep their grandson around. The John Engeman Theater will present Man of La Mancha, the poignant story of a dying old man who finds himself both a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition and his own mind; with music by Mitch Leigh, book by Joe Lardon, and libretto by Dale Wasserman, from June 26th, until August 3rd. The tale is a romantic and noble journey of a knight who sets out to right all wrongs and win the heart of a good woman as he duels windmills along the way. Man of La Mancha is the classic comic tragedy of man’s struggle against all odds to dream “The Impossible Dream.”

Thursday, June 5th at 7:30pm, Moving Pictures: Films by Contemporary Artists, a joint presentation of the Heckscher Museum of Art and the Cinema Arts Centre present Chelsea Girls, Andy Warhol’s epic portrait of the sex, drugs, and madness of Downtown New York City in the 1960s, with guest speaker, Dr. Kenneth Wayne, Chief Curator, Heckscher Museum of Art.

NAC Arts NEWS has a new look, and a new editor. I am happy to assume the task of editing our monthly newsletter and thank Pat Bond, NAC Director, and Laura DeSalvo, Membership Advisor, for their help and enthusiasm during this transition. Over the next few months I will begin to include some new formatting, sections and features. New in this issue, find Green Events: NAC encourages members to submit announcements for green events focusing on sustainable living, renewable energy, bioregionalism, and non-polluting materials that have low impact on the environment and our community. Green events are found in green text throughout the newsletter. Look for the green paint tube. Also new in this issue is an updated logo and an arts at a glance calendar.
