READERS’ THEATER

The Northport Reader's Theater will be meeting on March 17 at 7:30 at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport. They will be reading ”Ripeness Is All" and "Endings" by Dan Levin, two one-act plays about relationships.

Poets in Port

March 28,2008 - Poets in Port will take place at Caffé Portofino, 249 Main St., Northport, opposite the theatre at 7:30 p.m.  
Poets in Port evenings include a featured poet plus open reading - the audience is encouraged to bring their poems and participate. March's featured poet is
Michelle Whittaker and Kempton van Hoff.

Michelle Whittaker creates poetry at her computer early mornings while eating Clementine’s. She holds a Bachelor of Music in composition and piano. She won a scholarship for her collection of poems “Building a Backbone”.  Michelle currently enjoys reading at various Long Island venues and teaching music.Kempton Boone Van Hoff earned a BFA in Writing from Green Mountain College in 2002. Since then, he's brought his interdisciplinary approach to life in various fields and cities, though he'd always rather be in, on, or near the ocean. He is currently a teacher, writing assistant, and student at C.W. Post.

Next Month the Northport Arts Coalition celebrates its 10th Anniversary!  We hope that all those who were there at the beginning and all our present or prospective members will join us on April 9th at the Northport Library to look back and to look forward.

RIDOTTO CONCERT

Sunday March 2 at 4 pm       LANDSCAPES of the MIND  Music for violin, piano, voice and the rarely heard electronic instrument, the theremin. Renowned duo Anna Rabinova, violin, with Tatiana Goncharova, piano, play the Violin Sonata “Landscapes of the Mind” by Marga Richter, the nostalgic and humorous Sonata IV (“Children’s Day at the Camp meeting”)  by Charles Ives, and the dashing, virtuosic  Tzigane by Ravel. The theremin is performed by Kip Rosser. The wonderful, humorous piece by Maurizio Kagel: “Rrrrrraaa…..” is performed by Matt Koraus and Charlie Blueweiss, voices, with Isabella Eredita, piano.   CONCERT at Old First Church, 125 Main Street in Huntington (opp.Town Hall). Tickets $10 students, $20 general admission; $18 seniors; $15 members; $12  group rate (min.10 pp.)

The Wiyos Perform Vaudevillian Ragtime-Blues and Hillbilly Swing - At Last Licks Café in Huntington on March 29

On Saturday, March 29 the Last Licks Café presents The Wiyos, a Brooklyn-based trio whose repertoire stems from the American musical idioms of the 1920s and ‘30s. With instrumentation of washboard, harmonica, kazoo, resonator guitar, banjo, upright bass and three-part vocal harmony, The Wiyos perform old standards and their original compositions. The Café is located at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 109 Brown’s Rd, Huntington, New York. Showtime is 8:30 p.m. with an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15; $13 seniors and $5 students. Embracing Our Differences – Long Island 2008  

The Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity & Human Understanding, Inc. (CHDHU) invites submissions for its 2008 Embracing Our Differences exhibition.  The deadline for submissions is June 2.  Details are in the Call to Artists, which can be obtained by contacting CHDHU at 631-451-4700 or at chdhu@sunysuffolk.edu.  The brochure is also available on NAC NEWS MARCH '08.doc.  This year's exhibit will be on the grounds of the Nassau County Museum of Art as well as Heckscher Park and other locations to be announced.   Artists are invited to submit their work for Exhibition to be held on the grounds of the Nassau County Museum of Art and Heckscher Park Call or write for a detailed announcement. In celebration of Women's History, the Huntington Division of Women's Services is planning an Inter-Generational Art Exhibit and Reception at Town Hall on March 28th from 4 to 7 p.m.   Rhonda Shepardson is asking Women Artists to submit their work.  They can contact her  or send a picture of their work to her at rts@town.huntington.ny.us

Jane McGraw-Teubner won the Mortimer Freehof Memorial Award at the Salmagundi

Members Show in February. Jane will be having a one woman show the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook and a three person show with John Mansueto ans Sharon Way-Howard at Christopher Gallery, Stony Brook.

Amy Connor and Charlotte Koons are appearing in "The Vagina Monologues" as part of Cinema Arts Centre's celebration of V-Day's 10th anniversary on Sunday, March 30.  "The Vagina Monologues" was written by Eve Ensler to raise awareness of and end violence against women.  CAC's program begins with brunch, followed by a screening of "Until the Violence Stops."  A live performance of "The Vagina Monologues" comes next, and the day ends with a buffet reception catered by the Thatched Cottage.  Tickets can be purchased for the film/brunch ($12 members/$15 non-members), the performance/buffet ($25 member/$35 non-members), or the film/brunch/performance/buffet ($35 members/$45 non-members).  More information is available at the Cinema Arts Centre website (www.cinemaartscentre.org) or by calling 631-423-7611.

Starting March 1st, NAC member, Yvonne Suzuki Licopoli will be teaching a beginners yoga class on Saturdays at 11:30 AM and Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Jabari Yoga located at 52 Broadway in Greenlawn.  If you've been wanting to try yoga, this is a great place to start.  Learn the fundamentals of yoga's basic standing and seated postures in a safe, gentle environment.  For more experienced yogis, Yvonne is also teaching power yoga on Tuesdays at 9:30 AM
