The Northport Arts Coalition announces a unique opportunity for member artists.
NAC is sponsoring a series of six-week solo exhibits at Northport Tasting Room & Wine Cellar, 70 Main Street, Northport, NY.  Matthew Spirn, the proprietor of this elegant addition to Northport’s Main Street, has graciously offered space to exhibit the talents of NAC artists.  A panel of artists will select the work to be exhibited, with Spirn’s final approval. $30 filing fee. For an application form, email Kate Kelly at kate@katekellyart.com (subject: NAC Exhibit). The premiere exhibit will feature the work of Michael Krasowitz- he will be exhibiting a series of oil paintings he describes as “biomorphic surrealism”, using organic forms to reflect the subconscious experience of the artist. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 28th, 2-5 pm. All invited!

The Northport Reader's Theater meets on Sep 15th , 7:30 at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport, and will be reading "Hey Doc!" and "Who Knew?" by Michael Casano.  Harvest Time! NAC, as a member of the Northport Chamber of Commerce, would like to encourage our members to visit the Farmers Market in the Northport Village Park on Saturday mornings where they will find offerings of fresh produce from Long Island farms, flowers, baked goods, plants, and local seafood through November 22nd.


 


MUSIC

 

Blues, Folky, Funky, Punky, Country and Curious at Last Licks Café in Huntington on September 27th, Double Bill: Phil Minissale plays traditional blues on guitar, resonator, harmonica and porchboard bass. Sharing is Nina Romano’s Band, featuring melodramatic popular songs, folk rock and roots music on piano, autoharp, lapsteel guitar, mandolin, cello and drums. The opera, Johnny Appleseed, written by NAC Composer-violinist Matthew Pierce has been selected by the new Bluegrass Opera Company to be performed as part of their inaugural season.

Matthew Pierce also collaborate with choreographer Elsa Posey and designer Christine Darch and pianist Isabella Eredita-Johnson on a new ballet to be performed this December with the Posey Repertory Dance Company. www.matthewpierce.com.

On September 5th, Daniel Ragone will be opening a vocal studio in Northport at the Posey School. He will be coaching singers twice a month, the first and third Fridays for a limited amount of hours and will be accepting new students. For more information call (631) 473-0127.

Jo-Ann Corretti, a Northport artist for nearly 30 years, will be displaying her latest paintings and prints at this year's Cow Harbor Day Festival on September 21st, in the Northport Village Park as she has for the last 20 years...She will also have her Northport Christmas cards, Northport Mugs etc. for those who always want to get an early start for the upcoming holidays.



The American Pain Foundation & the Health Central Network announce the 2008 APF Pain and Creativity Exhibit.
The American Pain Foundation, in collaboration with The Health Central Network, is inviting people who have pain or are affected by pain to share their art—painting, sculpture, video, words, pictures—anything! Selected artists and their pain stories will be featured in the American Pain Foundation and Health Central Web sites, print publications, and in videos to raise awareness of the pain experience and the impact it has on the individual, family and society. James Twomey III, fine-art photographer, will exhibit at Gallery North 4th Annual Outdoor Art Show at Gallery North, 90 North Country Rd Setauket, NY on Saturday and Sunday 9/20 & 9/21, from 10 - 5 pm.

Jane McGraw Teubner won a first place award at the Salmagundi Art Club in August for her painting "Carmel Sunset" Jane was also accepted into the 2008 Catharine Lorillard Art Show and the Pastel Society of America's Annual Show, both held at the National Arts Club in New York City.

OPEN GALLERY, 66 Main Street Northport Village Presents: "Mutation" a show of the beautiful, inventive, stimulating and unique art of Korean born Heejung Kim. Ms. Kim produces art based on personal imagination and eastern philosophies. Her major works of art include handmade “artist books” and wrapped sculptures. Show runs Sept. 20th - Oct 12th. The first annual There’s No Place Like Northport 2009 Calendar goes on sale on Cow Harbor Day. THEATER

 

Bare Bones Theater Company Presents “Theater Games,” an original work by Long Island playwright Claude Solnik, inspired by a Long Island high school teacher's real life experiences. The thin line between playacting and truth is blurred, with devastating consequences, when some of the students perform “theater games” outside the classroom. The play is directed by Jeff Bennett, founder of Bare Bones, and stars Gene Connor, Theater Director at Syosset H.S. The Township Theater Group opens its 56th season with Agatha Christie’s courtroom thriller, Witness for the Prosecution, directed by Debbie Starker. A young married man spends evenings with a rich old woman, and when she is found murdered, the naïve young man is the chief suspect. DANCE

 

The Northport Arts Coalition, in co-operation with the Northport Public Library will present a Middle Eastern Cabaret Dance Night on September 10 at 7:00 p.m.  The evening will feature the Inner Spirit Yoga Center Troupe performing mystical, exotic dance rhythms that are the origins of belly dancing.  Audience participation encouraged.  Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave, Northport.  Free Admission.  For additional information call (631) 261-6930.

Green Events: NAC encourages members to submit announcements for green events focusing on sustainable living, renewable energy, bioregionalism, and non-polluting materials that have low impact on the environment and our community. Green events are found in green text throughout the newsletter. Look for the green paint tube.

Election Procedures:

1. Every two years the Executive Board selects a person to head a nominating committee

2. Nominating Committee meet in August to develop a slate. NAC Board members are on the Nominating Committee. They will submit a slate of officers at the September General Meeting.

3. Alternative slates may be presented at the September General Meeting. Officers on the slate must qualify for a NAC Board position.

4. If more than one slate is presented, elections for a slate will be held at the October General Board Meeting.

5. If there are no other slates presented at the September General Meeting, the slate presented by the nominating committee will be accepted at the next General Meeting in October.

6. To be eligible for office, a candidate should have attended three meetings/events per year and be a voting NAC member. A voting member should be a member for at least 90 days and be current with annual dues.

7. If more than one slate is presented, a yes or no vote will be cast by NAC members for the proposed slates. A majority vote will determine the slate.

8. An announcement of this procedure will be placed in the NAC News and posted in the Northport-East Northport Public Library.
