July 2009

NAC Wednesday July 8, 2009 at 7pm (NAC Wed.) The Northport Arts Coalition in cooperation with the Northport /East Northport Library presents: Broken Identities, a theater performance that explores issues of borders and identities within our community. The work was inspired by personal experiences collected by performance artist Margarita Espada and her daughter Mariana Lima. What does it mean to be Latina/Hispanic or Spanish? What borders are there to identify? These and other questions run throughout this multimedia production that includes music, acting, video, and physical theater. Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja is the first Latino theater company on Long Island to imploy the arts to increase cultural awareness and to promote social change. Free. Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport. For additional information call (631) 261-6930.

NAC wishes to express a special thank you to everyone who participated in our Plein Air Classical Music Festival.

The Northport Arts Coalition presented its first Plein Air Classical Music Festival on June 27th in conjunction with the Plein Air Painting Event. Local classical musicians Ruthann Turekian, The Matthew Pierce Ensemble, Rey Burns Crossroad, and Bassam Saba and The NY Arabic Orchestra performed in the gazebo at beautiful Northport Harbor Park, while children danced, artists painted, and the audience was enchanted with the brilliance and collective talent of our community. Assemblyman Raia stopped by to greet our audience and thank our musicians, and Mayor George Doll even halted his fish filleting at the Farmers Market to help NAC set up for the event. Resident Bassam Saba shared his exceptional musicianship and charm with Northport and made us all feel very proud to be part of a community that embraces diversity and cherishes the way music and art bring people together.
