Northport Arts Coalition, in cooperation with Matthew Spirn of the Northport Wine Tasting Room, presents an exhibit of paintings by Jillian Bernstein with an opening reception at the Northport Tasting Room, 70 Main St., Northport from 2 to 5 p.m.  Jillian draws from personal experience, the subconscious, and surroundings, the result is often a combination of expressionism, surrealism, impressionism and "Jillism".  She deals with the ego, the forbidden, the psyche, the human condition, the beautiful, the grotesque, reflection and perception.  Works on display from Oct 9 to November 19. The Northport Arts Coalition presents Do-ing Music with The Jade String Trio.  The Trio is celebrated for its wide ranging repertoire that embraces Western classical music, contemporary works, and Chinese folk and classical music arranged for violin, viola, and cello.  The Trio features violinist Wei Tan, violist Ching Chen Juhl, and cellist Marc Tagle.  Hailed by audiences and critics alike for its artistry, the Jade String Trio has recorded on Albany records, as well as performed live on WQXR and WNYC public radio.  A meet-the-artists reception will follow the performance at the Northport Public, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport, 7:30 p.m., FREE Admission.

Alternative-Acoustic Concert at Last Licks Café on Saturday, October 24

Open Mic: 7:30 p.m., Headliners: 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, October 24, the Last Licks Café features “Return to the Dream,” an alternative acoustic band that draws on folk, pop, rock, blues, and bluegrass to create original music. Diane Garisto, Tom Griffith, Martha Trachtenberg and Andy Huenerber comprise the band, whose name reflects the musicians’ personal commitments to return to the thing they love most, in their case, making music. One of their dreams is to foster a community of people who want to share their own stories of going back, or forward, in the direction of their dreams. The Amityville Artists Circle is hosting a juried photography competition.  The theme is "People." Doris Rowe shows four works from Woman Bites Collection at the Words Incorporated: Where Words Are Part of the Picture. This show features many art works with words at the Bryant Library Gallery, 2 Paper Mill Road, Roslyn, NY. Doris Rowe is thrilled to be part of the Embracing Our Differences, outdoor art exhibition celebration diversity, on the grounds of Long Island Museum, Stony Brook, on 25A.  An Artists' Reception & Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 8, 4 PM.  This annual contest, by open call, is produced by the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity, and Human Understanding, Suffolk Community College, Selden, NY, and sponsored by many arts organizations. Curators for this show: William Ayers, chief curator for the Long Island Museum, Beth Levinthal, executive director of the Hofstrar Art Museum, and  Howardena Pindell professor of art at Stony Brook University. John Ellsworth and his wife Elizabeth are being featured in a joint exhibit at the Northport Library for the month of October. John has on hand his "Water Palette" series of photos on canvas taken near and around Northport. Jane McGraw-Teubner has achieved "Master Pastelist" status in the Pastel Society of America. This honor is given to a signature member who has received three awards at their annual show. Jane also was accepted into the Mystic Maritime International Show held at the Mystic Marine Museum in Connecticut. www.janepastels.com

 

Mary Ahern, the Botanical Artist, has been selected by the Huntington Arts Council as the Spotlight Artist, for month of October. An extensive article about her Garden and her Art will be featured on their Website and Newsletter. Elizabeth Yaari has graciously invited Mary Ahern to the Art League of Long Island for their once a month Art Networking meeting, Art Brew. Mary will be the featured Artist and will be discussing her work, her style and her influences.

Danskinetics in Northport. Danskinetics classes meet on Thursdays starting in October at 10:00am at the Posey School of Dance, 57 Main St, Northport. New adult students are always welcome. In an ongoing effort to help raise funds for community organizations, the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport has announced it has set a goal to raise $50,000 for AIDS care on Long Island during the Long Island Professional Premiere of the award winning Broadway hit RENT playing September 10 - November 1, 2009. A portion of every ticket sold during the production of RENT at the John W. Engeman Theater will go to benefit two organizations that provide exemplary AIDS care to Long Islanders: The Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC), and Thursday's Child.Press Opening is Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 8:00 pm.

The Northport Historical Society will host a Country Auction at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Main Street, Northport on Saturday, October 17.   The event will include silent and Chinese auctions of themed baskets  as well as a live auction by Dean Failey of Christie’s.   Princess Peapod will entertain; wine and cheese will  be served. Proceeds benefit the museum which  preserves  the history of  Northport, East Northport, Fort Salonga, Asharoken and Eaton’s Neck .Tickets are $10 for members; $15 for non-members.
