NAC Wednesday Sept. 9, 2009 at 7pm (NAC Wed.) The Northport Arts Coalition in cooperation with the Northport /East Northport Library presents: "A Rainbow of Songs", music by pianist Jane Leslie, vocalist Rebecca Posteraro, and violinist Matthew Pierce at 7:00 p.m. at the Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport. Free.

Ms. Leslie has been honored with several ASCAP Awards and Meet the Composer grants.  Her original music is a blend of classical and popular styles.  She has two recordings of piano solos, Southampton Sunset and Dreamsongs available on CD.  Jane holds two degrees from the Juilliard School, as well as a Doctoral degree from the Manhattan School of Music.  For further information visit www.janelesliemusic.com  

Ms. Posteraro holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in vocal performance from SUNY Purchase in addition to a Masters Degree in music education from Long Island University.  Rebecca has sung with various companies including DiCapo Opera Theater in NYC where she was a Young Artist in Residence.  A few of her musical credits include Jekyll and Hyde (Emma), The Sound of Music (Maria), Jane Eyre (Blanche) The Music Man (Marian), and Camelot (Guenevere).  She currently lives in Northport where is a private voice instructor as well as a music teacher in the Northport-East Northport School District.

Composer-Violinist Matthew Pierce is celebrated for his new classical scores commissioned by major American ballet companies. His work has been performed around the country and around the world at City Center in New York, Covent Garden in London and the Palais Garnier in Paris. Lauded by media and musicians alike, Pierce's scores have been described as "new, tuneful, dancey" (Allen Ulrich, Voice of Dance), "the ideal musical vessel" (Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle), and "possibly the best commissioned score in Houston Ballet's history" (Molly Glentzer, Houston Chronicle). 

On September 14th, The Northport Reader's Theater will be reading the play "Ava" by Bonnie Corso.  It's 1975, Ava Gardner who loathes reporters, grants an interview to a young reporter as a favor to ex-hubby Frank Sinatra.  What follows is a hilarious battle of wits between Ava and the reporter, leading to a dramatic climax where facades are stripped away and truths revealed - -about both of them!  The reading will be followed by a discussion with the playwright.  All are welcome to read or to listen. 7:30 p.m. at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport. The Northport Arts Coalition, in cooperation with Matthew Spirn of the Northport Tasting Room and Wine Cellar, will present a photography exhibit by Linda Quinn.  An opening reception will be held September 6th at the Northport Wine Tasting Room, 70 Main St., Northport from 2 to 5 p.m.  Linda Quinn's work will be on display through October 8, 2009. Linda is an educator, photographer, book artist and sometimes web designer who travels extensively in a class A motor home with her husband Eddie.  Eddie is an avid cyclist, and travels with a family of bicycles. When not traveling, or spending winter months in Florida, Linda and Eddie make their home on the north shore of Long Island.

 

Northport Arts Coalition presents Poets in Port, a series of poetry readings on the last Friday of every month at 7:30 at Caffé Portofino, 249 Main St., Northport. On September 4th the Northport Arts Coalition presents the final Happenings event for the 2009 season.  Glen Baldwin and Friends of Jazz will perform a rollicking jazz fest from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Northport Village Park Area.  Donations for the Northport Food Pantry are accepted at each event.


MUSIC

Northport Arts Coalition and Barefoot Image present Happenings on Main Street. If you are planning to attend, Happenings is in need of volunteers to assist with the events. The Northport Community Orchestra will hold auditions for all sections on September 9th and 16th at 6:00 PM. Regular rehearsals are Wednesday evenings in East Northport. NAC Member soprano Ruthann Turekian Drewitz makes a return to Opera Night in Northport on Friday, September 4 at 7:30 PM at St.Paul's United Methodist Church at 270 Main Street for a very special evening of music by Puccini and Verdi. Directed by Daniel Ragone, some of the other singers present will be Ron and Julie Anne Meixsell, Gina Haver and Bruce Solomon who, along with Ruthann, comprise the new opera ensemble group OperAlive!


 

On Wednesday, September 30th from 12:15-12:45 Mr. Virgil Barkauskas, organist from St. Elizabeth's RC church in Melville will present the music of Charles Marie-Widor at First Presbyterian Church, 330 Main Street, Northport.  A free-will offering will be received.

 

Northport acoustic singer/songwriter Marie DelaCruz has released her debut album, No Expiration Date, on the Crazy Daisy Music label.  For more information, check out www.crazydaisymusic.com or www.mariedelacruz.com. Huntington Cabaret will be auditioning singers on Wednesday evening, September 2, for "Fascinating Rhythm" a dinner theater show with all proceeds directly benefiting the Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk's Hospice House.  We are looking for accomplished singers of all ages who have a following and are able to bring people to the show.  Groups will also be considered. Noted New York City Musical Director Jeff Cubeta will play for the show.  The benefit will be on Monday, October 19, at Nocello in Northport. NAC member and pianist, Ann Stevens
is hosting a fund-raiser at her Bayview Avenue, Northport home on Sunday afternoon, September 13, 4:00 p.m., to benefit Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk.  Ann is the pianist with vocalist Megan DeRiso in their "My Fair Ladies" cabaret show - featuring the best of Broadway's leading ladies.  There will be a pre-concert wine and cheese reception, followed by gourmet desserts and coffee after the show.  This is the second of three benefit concerts featured in the VNSHS Summer Concert series.  A free will donation is appreciated; seating is limited, so please phone 757-1812 for reservations."

Danskinetics in Northport. Danskinetics classes meet on Thursdays starting in October at 10:00am at the Posey School of Dance, 57 Main St, Northport. New adult students are always welcome. In an ongoing effort to help raise funds for community organizations, the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport has announced it has set a goal to raise $50,000 for AIDS care on Long Island during the Long Island Professional Premiere of the award winning Broadway hit RENT playing September 10 - November 1, 2009. A portion of every ticket sold during the production of RENT at the John W. Engeman Theater will go to benefit two organizations that provide exemplary AIDS care to Long Islanders: The Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC), and Thursday's Child.Press Opening is Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 8:00 pm.

 

The Bare Bones Repertory Company presents Arthur Miller‘s “A View from theBridge”-
