NAC WEDNESDAY

July 14, 2010 at 7pm 2010. Northport Arts Coalition and the Northport Public library present: Blue Detour, a 4 piece Bluegrass Band who have played in and around Long Island and New England since 1996.  The band features both traditional and modern Bluegrass Music done with a local Northeastern flavor.  Their music features tight lead and harmony singing blended with skillful musicianship.  Mandolin player, John Chainy, studied harmony singing and music theory at South Plains College in TX with Alan Munde and Joe Carr.  George Cannova has 20 years of playing experience and studied jazz guitar with Billy Bauer, later gravitating toward bluegrass after hearing Tony Rice. George sings lead and harmony parts and plays mandolin as a second instrument. Dennis Corbett has played hard driving banjo for 25 years and built the banjo he plays on stage. He also runs the Bluegrass Club of Long Island. Music

NAC EVENT Fridays, through September 3. The Northport Arts Coalition presents Happenings on Main Street, Long Island's most unique street music program. Twelve years of great musical entertainment. Features singer/songwriters, jazz, blues, swing, bluegrass, country, popular and open mic. Friday evenings, 7-8:30 PM at the edge of Northport Village Park. All age appropriate. Northport Community Band presents “Of Notes and Notables” and will build on the previous 51 seasons and reinforce why great family-friendly entertainment doesn’t have to be expensive. Each concert, which has its own theme, offers a blend of overtures, marches, light classics and popular favorites, and includes such weekly features as the Northport Chorale, Northport Community Jazz Band, and various guest conductors and performers. Enjoy Americana at its best by bringing a lawn chair or blanket to Northport Village Park for five Thursday evenings beginning July 1st. All concerts begin promptly at 8:30pm (rain at 8, no date) and last approximately 70 minutes. Free!  The band is dedicating its 52nd season to the memory of Marjorie H. Krueger, Bob’s wife 60 years, who passed away on December 10th. Remembered by hundreds of Northport piano students, Marge was the bands “Mom” for 51 wonderful years, and will be sorely missed.

July 8th  at 8.30pm-  Ridotto performance ‘Music for Chagall’, a classical multi- media concert with renowned cellist Andrei Tchekmazov (Kol Nidrei, Debussy, Tschedrin), pianist Svetlana Gorokhovich, soprano Tammy Hensrud (Shostakovich, Poulenc, stravinsky), and with international star dancer Victoria Edgar. Margaretha Maimone is narrator. CONCERT takes place in Summer Arts Festival, Route 25A Heckscher Park in Huntington. Performance is free. 

 

July 11th. Rey Burns-Crossroad plays at Dowling College, 150 Idle Hour Blvd., Sunday 2 PM, outdoors on the lawn along the Connetquot River -- an eclectic group that plays a wide range of music with a rhythm section that brings a refreshing blend of jazz, classical, and Latin sounds, and  jazz standards. Rey Burns, is the composer and leader of this group.  One of his compositions, FLYING, will be played by the Long Island Philharmonic Orchestra on July 17th at 8 PM at Heckscher State Park.

NAC EVENT July 23rd Do-Ing Music: The Northport Arts Coalition in cooperation with The Northport-East Northport Library is proud to present Celebrations Brass on Friday, July 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. at The Northport Library, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport.Celebrations Brass is a Massapequa based brass ensemble whose members include Patrick Dougherty, director (trumpet/baroque trumpet), James Cesare (trumpet), Kathleen Dougherty (horn), Larry Witmer (trombone) and Ronald Stanton (bass trombone).

Their audience appeal spans the generations, ranging from their highly acclaimed "in-school" presentations for young people to their award-winning programs for senior citizens. DANCE at The Posey School This Summer July 6, 2010. Posey School Summer Program includes DANCE, ART, MUSIC and DRAMA classes for everyone from toddlers and their moms to aspiring professional dancers.  NAC EVENT The Northport Arts Coalition will present the 2010 Art in the Park Event on July 24th, at Northport Village Park. Applications from artists and craftspeople interested in selling their work are due on June 30th. $10 Late Fee if received after deadline All work must be handmade by the artist.  No kits, manufactured items, purchased pieces, imports or resale items will be permitted. July 11 to August 15th, the Art League of Long Island is pleased to present the landscapes and interiors of William Starkweather (1879 ­ 1969), early 20th century American painter, from the collection of Peter Falotico of Northport. Full of vitality, the thirty-five watercolors and oils on view, painted largely during Starkweather’s summer travels to remote locales in Maine and the maritime provinces of Canada, provide a visual diary of his life and show us a thoughtful artist who rejected the prevalent style of his day to create works that are surprisingly modern to our eyes. July 15-31st The Bare Bones Repertory Company presents Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar named Desire”- a juggernaut of a play -- as powerful in its effect on 21st century audiences as it was at its Broadway premiere in 1947. August 13th ,The Bare Bones Repertory Company presents "Ten Thousand Stories" by Susan Demasi (a reading), Friday, August 13, 8pm.  at The Posey School, 57 Main St., Northport. During the Great Depression, FDR hired out-of-work writers to tell the story of America through interviews with immigrants, factory workers, former slaves and thousands of other “ordinary” Americans.   But the project soon came under attack from the House Un-American Activities Committee for “subversive” activities.  Ten Thousand Stories: A Documentary Play, tells the story of how writing and politics clashed, dramatizing the lives of those who worked on the project, and those whose stories they tried to tell. Directed by James Conversano.  All tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
