NAC WEDNESDAY

September 22nd, 2010. Northport Arts Coalition and the Northport Public library present Greek music and dance by the Youth Dance Group, ages 13-18, from St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Shrine Church in Greenlawn.  Join in the fun, learn more about Greek culture through music and dance.  The dancers' enthusiasm is contagious and leaves everyone wanting more.  7:00 p.m. at the Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport. September 3, 2010.  Celebrate the First Friday of every month at The Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington. Enjoy original songs performed by talented members from Huntington’s Folk Music Society featuring David Bailey, Denise Romas and Princess Peapod (David Cook and Michelle Frimmer).Celebrating their 41st anniversary, today's Society continues its long established tradition by rejoicing in the growing varieties of folk music styles. September 16th. The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport Presents My Fair Lady September 16 through October 30, 2010.  Winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical.  This musical interpretation of George Bernard Shaw's classic Pygmalion revolves around the uneducated Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl with a dreadful English accent.  Eliza becomes the center of a bet between the worldly linguist, Colonel Pickering, and the self-absorbed phoneticist, Mr. Henry Higgins.  Pickering wagers that Higgins cannot make good on a claim to teach Eliza to speak and act like a proper lady.  For additional information, show times and tickets visit www.engemantheater.com 

 

September 25th. On September 25 the Last Licks Café presents Ikebe Shakedown, a seven-piece Afro-Funk band out of Brooklyn . The band combines traditional African and Latin rhythms with melodies and grooves steeped in American funk, soul, and jazz, featuring a hard-hitting rhythm section and dynamic horns.The Last Licks Café is located at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 109 Brown’s Rd, Huntington, NY. September 26, 2010 – OperAlive! will be performing at Fortunoff Hall in the Vanderbilt Ballroom at Dowling College in Oakdale, NY at 2 PM, sponsored by the Islip Arts Council. Singers in the group are Gina Haver, Julie Anne and Ron Meixsell, Bruce Solomon, NAC member Ruthann Turekian and NAC member Daniel Ragone as music director. Program will include works by Handel, Mozart, Dvorak, Verdi, Beethoven, Puccini, Donizetti and Bizet. There will be a wine and cheese reception at intermission. The Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library will host the TransAtlantic Ensemble featuring clarinetist Mariam Adam (from the Imani Winds) and pianist Evelyn Ulex. Acclaimed as virtuosic, engaging and innovative, the ensemble will offer a Berlin and New York fusion of classical and jazz compositions for clarinet and piano. September 4th . John Ellsworth won "first place in photography" at the Montauk Fine Art Show on August 20-22, 2010. He also won "second-place in photography and graphic arts" at the Mary O. Fritche Fine Arts Show in Westhampton Beach on August 7 & 8, 2010.

Through September 12th.  Making Waves: A Faculty Exhibition Opens at the Art League of Long Island August 21 The heart of the Art League of Long Island is its distinguished and dedicated faculty. In advance of the fall semester, the Art League of Long Island honors them in an exhibition of their personal work.The exhibit will be on display August 21 through September 12 at the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in their facility at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.   Admission to the gallery is open to the general public Monday through Friday 9am – 4pm and on Saturdays 11am – 4pm.   The gallery will be closed Monday September 6 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.  The opening reception will be on Friday August 20, 5:30 – 7:30pm. Artists have always traveled to study, to vacation and in search of inspiration.  This exhibition presents 30 alluring images of some of the world’s major cities by American artists from the Museum’s Permanent Collection.  Works by William Merritt Chase, Georgia O’ Keeffe and Jules Olitski, among others, will be included.  Especially appealing are five lively prints from Risaburo Kimura’s Great Cities of the World series, here seen in exuberant images of Paris, Venice, Madrid, Shanghai and Bangkok. Jane McGraw-Teubner has been accepted into the 38th Annual Pastel Society of America's juried show, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's Annual Show, both held at the National Arts Club and the Connecticut Pastel Society's Annual Show.

Northport Reader's Theater will open it's fall season with a reading of two new plays, "The Surprise Party" by Jeff Stolzer and "Tulips" by Pam Burris, on Monday, September 13, 7:30 PM at St Paul's Untied Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport. All are welcome to participate in the reading and the discussion with the playwrights.

NAC Board member Christine Darch has designed a new ballet for choreographer Matthew Neenan for Coloado Ballet to premiere on September 10th, 2010 in Denver.

 

 

October 13, 2010, 7 p.m. At the Northport Public Library (Free Admission) NAC presents the international dancer, choreographer, teacher and author, Susanne Daeppen who will present SILK : A Slow Movement Dance from Nature to the Soul, in the tradition of Japanese Butoh Dance.  Studying under Kazuo Ohno in Japan and Eiko & Koma in NYC, "From them I learned the magic of slow movement, which touched my soul .I wanted to live a dance by which the secrets of life could be discovered."  Susanne has taught and performed her exquisite dance works like "Fragile"all over Europe and NAC is proud to bring her to you.
