NAC ARTS NEWS February 2011

NAC WEDNESDAY

NAC EVENT February 9th, 2011 - The Northport Arts Coalition, in cooperation with the Northport/E.Northport Library presents, "How They Danced in Early New England: A Contra Dance Demo/Workshop".  Long before couple dancing was the norm, social dancing in early America was done in groups. Each group or “set” was arranged in a long line of pairs.  Traditionally, but not necessarily, one male and one female would execute simple figures, with the other dancers, up and down the line. These lively, simple dances are still done around the world and are called Contra Dancing. After a demo, the audience will be invited onto the floor.  No fancy steps, no swinging, mostly walking in simple patterns.  A live fiddle band, featuring Larry Moser and Mary Nagin, will provide the music with instruction by Annette Kirk.  Suitable for ages 8 and up. Non-dancers will enjoy listening to the lively traditional reels, jigs and waltzes.  7:00 p.m., Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave. For information call (631) 261 6930. Free Admission.

January 15, 2011 - March 27, 2011 Identity Crisis: Authenticity, Attribution and Appropriation. Identity Crisis explores issues relating to the artistic use of other artists’ styles and images. Historically popular artists had followers, imitators and forgers, while more recent artists openly adopt well-known images and styles to comment on originality, authorship and culture. This exhibition presents old master and nineteenth-century works from The Heckscher Museum Permanent Collection, providing a framework for connoisseurship issues, such as authenticity and attribution. Artists to be considered include Giovanni Antonio Canale (called Canaletto), Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-Desire-Gustave Courbet, and George Inness, among others. Contemporary appropriation artists add a new dimension to the use of adopted images, as seen in the work of such artists as Mike Bidlo, David Bierk, George Deem, Audrey Flack, Kathleen Gilje, Paul Giovanopoulos, Deborah Kass, Jiri Kolar, Sherrie Levine, Carlo Mariani, Yasumasa Morimura, Vik Muniz, Richard Pettibone, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and others, providing an instructive and stimulating counterpoint to the issues raised by the historical works in the show. Heckscher Museum, Huntington.

Through March 28, 2011. A Timeless Legacy This exhibition highlights the breadth and quality of the Permanent Collection, which is devoted to European and American art.  Founded by industrialist and philanthropist August Heckscher, the Museum's core collection comprises Old Master paintings, English portraiture and 19th century European and American art that was dedicated by Heckscher to the citizens of Huntington in 1920.  Among the works on view from the original Heckscher gift are Lucas Cranach the Elder’s Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels, 1534, the earliest painting in the collection, Franz Wolfgang Rohrich's Charles V of Holland and Jeanne La Folle, His Mother, Melchoir d’Hondecoeter’s Stripped of Borrowed Feathers: The Raven-Jackdaw and Francois Girardon’s rare bronze, Rape of Proserpine, 1693. Also on view are notable subsequent acquisitions, including George Grosz’s masterpiece, Eclipse of the Sun, 1926 and Marsden Hartley's Garmisch-Partenkirchen #1, 1933-34, as well as Helen Frankenthaler's July understated, 1967, which is on extended loan from the Heckscher family.  This installation highlights the Museum's most recent acquisition, Shinnecock Hills, a Long Island landscape by the American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, who directed a summer art school on the East End of the Island during the 1890s.  A selection of other works by the master and his numerous students is also on display. Heckscher Museum, Huntington.

Through a variety of media, each artist instills their personal voices in their work and then shares those passions with us," said Art-trium Gallery Curator, William Grabowski. Located at The Art-trium Gallery (25 Melville Park Rd., Melville, N.Y. 11746). The exhibit will close on April 4th, 2011. Monday-Friday: 7am-7pm & Saturday: 8am-1pm.
